PRACTISING CREATIVE WRITING: DESCRIBING MY CHARACTER POETICALLY

EYES FULL OF MISERY AS SHE REMINISES OVER ONE TERRIBLE EVENING,

TEARS FOREVER STAIN HER PALE PORCELINE SKIN,

EYES REFLECT THE STORM WITH A WHIRLWIND OF DEEP BLUES AND PLUM,

SHE REMEMBERS THE YELLOW GLOW OF THE SUN BREAKING THROUGH THE DARK SKIES IN THE FAR DISTANCE,

OCCASIONALY BOLTS OF LIGHTING ENCOMPASS THE SKY WITH METALLIC FLASHES OF COLOUR,

HER ORANGE HAIR EVOLVES INTO A UNRULY BALL OF CURLS AS SHE IS PROTECTED FROM ENGULFMENT BY AN ALMIGHTY TORNADO.

CHARACTER MAKE-UP INSPIRATION

Nose broken - may relfect fighting background. Ageing characteristics implies the character is old.

Shape, form and positioning of eyebrow. Explain cause and suugests character was a soldier in war.

Determines sex of character. Implies facial hair is untamed and wild, suggests the character is scruffy.

Sad facial expression

Tear stains on skin, pale skin colouring

Eye colour: dark, deep blues and plum, yellow, metallic

Wild hairstyle - curly?

I will take inspiration from the hairstyle in the first image which takes the form of a messy bun piled high on top of the head. The following four images are by make-up artist Pat Mcgrath here I will take inspiration from the pale complexions on the models, as well the cupid's bow style lip shape which will emphasise the youthfulness of my character. The colour palette is also particularly inspiring as it reflects various dark undertones, deep plums and metallic colouring. Inspiration will also be taken from the final two images which use make-up to create tear effects. It is also interesting to see the random placement of various colours in the final image.

Babyliss curling tongs used to add tight curls to bun.

Backcomb bun with Denman backcombing brush

Hair tie, hairspray and hair grips used to hold hair in position

MAC 'NC 15' foundation applied all over face and neck with buffing brush.

Kryolan Ultra foundation in white applied thickly to cheekbones and collar bone.

MAC skin finish 'Soft and Gentle' highlighter applied down bridge of nose and cupids bow.

Benefit Rockateur blush applied to apples of cheeks using Real techniques blush brush.

MAC lip liner in 'Currant' drawn over eyebrows and onto waterline.

Inglot eyeshadow in Yellow, Orange, Purple, Pink and Blue applied randomly all around eyes.

Barry M dazzle dust patted over eyelid in shade 44 and 82.

MAC lustre drops in Sun Rush applied from bottom upwards for tears.

MAC sheen supreme lipstick in 'Good to be bad' patted onto lips in cupid bow shape.

PROCESS

Apply NC15 (2 shades lighter than models natural skin tone) all over face and neck with buffing brush. Apply a thick layer of white Kryolan ultra foundation across cheekbone.

Pat on Inglot eyeshadow in pink with flat brush around outer corner of eye. Intensify colour with purple.

Blend yellow and orange Inglot eyebrow up into eyebrow. Blend matte black all over eyelid. Carefully pat Barry M dazzle dust 84 (midnight blue) over centre of eye lid and hold tissue under eye to catch fall out.

Place Bary M dazzle dust in '44' (bronze) onto the inner eye. Apply MAC lustre drops under eye starting from the bottom upwards to create tears.

Apply MAC 'currant' lip liner in a thin arch above natural eyebrows and in waterline. Add MAC 'soft and gentle' down nose and on cupids bow to highlight. White out lips with Kryolan white foundation and pat on MAC 'good girl gone bad' in a cupid's bow shape.

Section off the hair using a tailcomb at the nape of the neck. Tie the rest of the hair into a high ponytail. Backcomb the hair and shape into a rounded bun and clip into postion. Curl stands of hair at the front of the head and position over bun. Create a plait with bottom section of hair and wrap around bun. Grip and hairspray.

EVALUATION

WHAT WENT WELL AND HOW DID I ACHIEVE IT?

  • Plaiting the hair from the nape of the neck and winding it around the hair was an effective method because it reflected the shape and formation of a tornado which reflects the back story behind my character successfully.

  • The hair reflected an 'unruly and wild' appearance with lots of volume. I achieved this by backcombing the hair at the root and then teasing into position and securing with grips. I also used heated tongs to curl front sections of the bun allowing me to achieve a more messy texture. I selected a model with naturally ginger hair so there was not need to spray the hair ornage to reflect key characteristics of my creation. Luckily, my model had naturally thick hair which also emphasised the volume of the hairstyle as there was more hair to back comb.

  • The cupid's bow lips stick create a youthful appearance to the character which expressed her youth. I achieved this by neutralising the lips with white foundation to emphasise the cupid bow shape to make it look more realistic and defined. I was also happy because the lips were neat and even in shape - this was achieved through carefully placement of product and by outlining the lip with a lip liner prior to lipstick application to ensure it was symmetrical. I also applied corrective techniques by exaggerating the bottom lip outwards so that the top and bottom lip were even in shape.

  • The make-up includes various textural elements which translates successfully as a 3-dimensional make-up. This includes the thick layering of white of the cheekbones to suggest a pale complexion and the use of liquid to create the tear drops which is more effective than simply painting the tears on which would look flat.

  • The deep undertones of colours used on the eyes, such as purples and blues, works successfully in relation to the deep plum used on the eyebrows, waterline and lips ensuring that the make-up works well as a whole. I achieved this by referring to colour theory and selected colours which complement one another.

  • The colouring on the eyes was also successful as midnight blues and plums reflected a stormy sky, the yellow and orange represented a sunset and the flashes of metallic represented lighting. It also usefull to experiment with shimmer and matte finishes to achieve a more 3-dimensonional make-up.

  • I was careful to ensure the pigment product did not drop out onto the models face which would ruin the foundation. I achieved this by not overloading the eyeshadow brush with product and by placing a tissue under the eye which caught any excess product as I carefully patted the product onto the eyelid.

WHAT DIDN'T GO WELL AND HOW DID I OVERCOME IT AND WHAT DO I NEED TO IMPROVE FOR NEXT TIME?

  • The plait could have been made thicker as it was not visible from the front angle of the hair. This was caused as the hair thinned towards the end of the plait, so that when it wrapped around the front of the hair, the end (thinnest section) was postioned at the front. In future, to overcome this I would take a larger section at the nape of the section to ensure the plait is thicker.

  • On close inspection, the redness of some blemishes is evident through the make-up. To overcome this, I should have applied my knowledge of colour theory to the make-up by appying a green corrective product over the blemishes to counteract the redness.

  • I should have applied more white contouring and colouring to the neck area to intensify the pale colouring of my character.

  • To emphasis the sad facial expression of my character I should have drawn on the eyebrows in a more downturned angle.
