HAIR PUNCHING RESEARCH

Wayne's example of hair punching. It is important to note that the angle you punch hair is the angle it will sit.

Hair punching on the ears.

NOTES ON HAIR PUNCHING:

- The needle must go into the silicone when punching hair

- Don't go all the way through the silionce as the hair on the opposite side will poke through and iritate your models. To overcome this simply trim the hairs as close to the silicone as possible

- Hold hair horizontally as you punch

- Punch in the direction you want the hair it lay and remember to follow the natural direction of hair growth

- Punch single hairs with a short turn back

- Position the hair into the crook on the needle when punching

To create stubble, punch the hair into the face and use hair clippers or electric beard trimmer to shave off long hairs.

Crown punching needle is quicker than traditional hair punching because you can populate the surface quicker.

Save time by hand laying the body of the reach and hair punch around the edges.

Use lighter hairs around the edge so it blends easier.

Main advantage of hair punching is that if you make a mistake you can pull out the hair.

Hair punching is easier than knotting a wig as there is no lace.

Adding a mixture o hair colours will make the final outcome look more realistic.

Method for making your own needle:

- Hold the needle with a pair of pliers

- Cut off part of the needle at an angle with a Dremel cutting wheel, creating a 'U' or a 'V'.

- Sharpen the edges to a point

NOTES FROM DVD:

HOW TO MAKE A PUNCHING NEEDLE

- John James punching needles size 10

- Snip edge with pliers, snap off just one side

- Sand edge to remove sharpness with a sanding stone (see above)

HOW TO PUNCH HAIR

- Take sections of hair punch into the head

- If you are unhappy with the placement of the hair you can pull them out

- Punch the hairs over the fur transfer so that it creates a transition between fur transfer and flocking

- Add in variations of colour as you punch

HOW TO PUNCH HAIR WITH DENISE BAER. (n.d.). [DVD] USA: STAN WINSTON SCHOOL.

NOTES FROM DVD:

- Tools and materials: pin vice or knotting hook holder, John James beading needles size 10, 12, 15 (the higher the number the smaller the needle)

- Generally need 4oz of hair for a full head

- Draw on a hairline with chalk liner

DOUBLE HAIR PUNCHING

1. Fold hair in half

2. Start from the end of the tash and work your way in inwards from the bottom upwards

3. Make the positioning of hairs organic

4. Punch in the direction you want the hairs to sit

5. Dip the needle in a pot of silicone prior to punch to secure the hair more in the head

6. Maximum 2 hairs doubled over for punching into the head

7. Gently tugs hairs to pull out if you make a mistake

NOTE: This method builds hair density

CURLING HAIR IRONS

1. Test on the ends of the hairs

2. Place at the root and curl under to give hair volume

SINGLE HAIR PUNCHING

1. Turn over single strand by approximately 0.5-1cm

NOTE: Silicone is easier to punch than foam

BENDING THE NEEDLE TO MAKE PUNCHING EASIER

- Heat with a lighter and bend the needle

- This keeps the hair flat to surface and gives you more flexability with hand positioning

MAKING A PUNCHING NEEDLE

1. Place needle in vice and cut off end

2. Cut the second prong as far down as possible

3. Sand the point with sanding stone or paper

4. Sand punching needle into a sharp point

PUNCHINF WITH SILICONE CAULKING

1. Cut the finger off a latex glove and put over a dental cup

2. Put silicone in the cup

3. Secure again with latex glove and tie a hair band around

4. This method helps hair adhere to foam latex, punch the needle into the top of the caulking every 3 punches

5. Soak a stipple sponge in DC200 (thick silicone) and insert needle for lubrication

BLENDING HAIR

1. Cut wefts into sections and line up at root

2. Get excess hair out by brushing out with finger tops

3. Hold hair at root and comb through to blend - alternative method to using a hackle.

NOTES FROM TUTORIAL:

- Traditional punch needle, can make yourself by cutting in half at an angle with a Dremel tool and then sharpen

- Crown punch needle, multiple hooks

- Recommends buffalo hair for beards as it is coarser

- Tools: hair wax, hairspray, scissors, hair irons, hair clippers, hair brushes

- Draw hair outline using white chalk - can remove at the send with alcohol

- Uses 36 needle on neck as it is coarser and less visible

- Lay root of hair against neck and punch needle in repeatedly

- Use hair clipper to achieve shorter, stubble effect

- Work angle of hair in accordance with hair growth

- Blow compressed air over head to remove excess hairs

- Hardest to punch eyebrow due to various direction in hair growth

- Rub hair wax over eyebrows

- Use traditional punch needle to punch eyelashes - can punch more than one hair at a time in same folicle. Use double punching method

- Fold eyelashes around marcel curling tong in upwards direction

- Trim hair

NOTES FROM TUTORIAL

- Small needle, the smaller the better

- Fit into knotting hook holder

- Grind eye of needle with Dremel tool or bench grinder to achieve a hook shape

- Make several needle incase one breaks

- Crepe hair and human hair (priced depending on length). Uses 6-8inch length hair.

- Bead on silicone sealant and lay on body of hair

- Traditional hair punching method, punch multiple hairs at a time

In this tutorial large scissors are used for trimming the eyebrows which is unsuitable for trimming fine hair

NOTES FROM TUTORIAL

- This demonstration is good because it provides a close up of hair punching which allows me to gain a clearer understanding of the positioning of the hair in the needle, as well as the angle at which is its punched

This demonstration could be improved by including step by step instructions on screen or a voice over to give a clear explaination to show what is going on.

Here the first character includes hair that has been punched into the cowl. It is successful becuase it includes a depth and variation of colour to reflect natural hair. It also becomes sparser towards the end so that it blends more naturally into the prosthetics. The second character will be wearing a wig or have his natural hair - either way the silicone prosthetic has been punched with hair at the top to create the illusion of a hairline.

David Malinowski is a renouned hair puncher within the prosthetics and make-up industry. Here you can see that his works include busts and minatures. He is another talented individual who creates realistic hair effects through the appropriate selection of hair colours and accurately follows the natural growth patten of hair. I particularly like the punched eyebrow images because this is the most difficult features to achieve through hair punching - however, Malinkowski has made them look ultra realistic.

Bill Turpin is another prosthetics artist who is skilled in hair punching. Here it is clear that Turpin has used reference images to accurately locate hair on the hand. However, he has only used white hairs and it would perhaps look more realistic with a few darker tones or even blonde hair to make the hairs have more depth and variation. It also appears like he has missed punching hairs on the index and middle fingers.

Jamie Salmon - another talentend sculptor who is skilled in hair punching. His various busts follow the natural direction of hair growth, as well as including a variation of hair colours to ensure that the hair translates as naturally as possible. I am particuarly fond of the above piece which includes hair punched eyebrows, moustache and beard. If I were to be picky, I would say that the beard looks too neat and symmetrical which would not necessarily represent natural human beards.

Here hyperrealistic sculptor Ron Mueck has created amazing giant-sized humans in the form of a baby and head. It would have been very difficult to source the hair for this project because it would have needed to be very long - therefore it was likely to come from something like a horses mane. Nethertheless, the pieces look super realistic and the hairs follow the natural direction of hair growth.

Sam Jinks - another hyperrealistic sculptor who has produced amazing prosthetic busts of humans which include hair punching effects. I most enjoy the above image, 'woman and child (2010)' - here Jinks has used human hair to punch into the babies head which he will have them cut and used hair wax to ensure to sticks flat to the head. I am unsure whether the old ladies hair is infact a wig or hair punched - regardless of this, the hair direction, colouring and styling is superb.

It is important to include reference images to study hair and directional growth patterns. Use a variety of colours and punch hair that becomes lighter towards the ends.

Hairon the main body of the head can be glued on. Leave a two inch thickness for punching hair.

1. Bend a length of hair over your index finger, creating a loop.

2. Grab the hair from the loop using the hair punching needle and inject into the desired area

Alternative method to punching in eyelashes is to buy false ones and glue them on.

Denise is an experienced hair puncher who entered the industry in 1991. She is known for her meticulous attention to detail and hair direction. Denise has in excess of 30 feature films and has worked for Multi-Oscar award winnders Rick Baker and the late Stan Winston.
