PROFESSIONAL MAKE-UP PROJECT

PRESENTATION

FEEDBACK FROM LAURA

Following the presentations I explained to Laura my character would consist of full-face prosthetics, fingers, and a cowl with hair punched into it. She then confirmed that my concept would qualifyfor 40 credits so I was able to begin my creative make-up processes and develop my design ideas.

I come from a creative background, studying art at A level and a foundation diploma in Art and Design.

Also experienced in media make-up prior to starting the courses, as well as, fashion make-up whilst working for Benefit Cosmetics.

Images L-R:

- Zombie Project, the make-up included a bald cap, laying on crepe hair, latex infection across side of the face and sculpt gel wound on side of head and around mouth.

- Falklands Marine, the make-up included dirtying down, gelglyk burn across side of face, wax cut across nose and sculpt gel split lip.

- Ageing Project, the make-up included wig application, full face silicone prosthetic, hand laid eyebrow hairs.

Image (Left): Work for a photography student on the foundation Diploma. Make-up inspired by Painter, Gustav Klimt. She wanted hair straightened, deep lip colour and contouring with eyes left natural. Job roles also included, applying the head piece and constructing the plastic skirt on set.

Image (Middle): Work for a second year commerical photographer. Inspired by Edward Scissorhands. Hair was flattended on top and backcombed on ends. Make-up has a heavy foundation coverage, contouring and highlighting. Eyebrows whitenend, and lips stained with burgandy.

Work for a third year commercial photographer. Shoot inspired by Memento Mori. Featured in Feroce Magazine. My job role included 5 hair and make-up looks - starting with the most simple and finishing with the heaviest make-up. Hairstyles included, wind-swept and away from the face, tied in a bun, a harsh centre parting. Make-up was dewy, fresh-face and highlighted, incorporating shades of lilac and berry, and white eyeliner flicks.

Short-film filmed in Manchester. 1 day shoot. Make-up included a basic make-up on an asian male and latex ageing on an actress in her late 30's to appear in her 50's. Hair was also styled up in rollers.

Short-film for an MA graduate. Basic make-up for lead roles. Police woman needed her hair tied in a low bun and basic make-up. Male needed powdering and concealing of blemishes and hair styled loose and messy.

Working at IMATS and UMAE. Here I assisted Vincent De Monfried with a robot/cyborg inspired body paint which included covering the whole body in paint and positioning stencils in place. The second alien inspired body art included the application and colouring of flat pieces .

I am the most confident with sculpting and knotting postiche and the application and colouring of prosthetics. However, I need to focus more on improving my mould making skills, for example feeling confident with the correct products and techniques for mould making. I would also like to improve my hair skills so I may attend an extra course to focus solely on hair. I am least inspired by theatre work as I find the make-up fairly uninspiring and over the top.

I find prosthetics make-up the most interesting and challenging aspect of the course - I love the ability to transform people into something else through the use of prosthetics. Therefore, I would like to specialise in this area.

For my first idea, I explored the notion of creating a ghost/apparition inspired by a historical case study of a human haunting. For example, The Brown Lady or the White Lady. With this my idea would focus on wig work and creating a decayed/rotting character from the dead through the use of prosthetics.

For my second idea, I explored the concept of creating a non-human entity. This could be an evil character with focus made of the distortion and elongation of features which are expressed through wispy and smokey images of spirits.

Make-up inspiration will depend on which Idea I focus on. Make-up could include a deathly colour palette including shades of either, white, grey, black, lilac, and purple. I could also explore veining techniques, as well as a bald cap or cowl to remove characteristics of hair. Alternatively, it may be beneficial to create a ghostly grey wig or use sparse hair attached to a bald cap.

To further develop certain characteristics of my character and to create a realistic back story it will be important to look at the following research ideas. For example, looking at Supernatural films will provide me with inspiration for sound and mood effects when filming my character in context.
