NOTES ON SILICONE PAINTING:
- Silicone painting involves 3-4 elements
1. Solvents/NAPTHA. These include: panel wipe, lighter fluid, low odor white spirit, pure naptha.
2. Silicone. Mix A and B to catalyse. Alternatively, buy pre catalused products such as, '1 hour shower'. Can freeze the silicone is needed. Must be mixed to a runny/syrup consistency with the naptha.
3. Pigments. These include: silicone pigments (techno-vent/factor 2) or oil paints.
4. Silicone oil. This makes the silicone and pigment blend easier.
Process:
1. Clean brushes with naptha/clean mould to remove oils.
2. Mix the naptha and silicone.
3. Pour equal measurments of the mixture into a painting palette and add pigments to each section of the palette.
4. Build up layers of transluscent colour
5. Begin with the darker colours and gradually go lighter.
6. Powder between layers to absorb excess solvent. Products such as baking powder and icing sugar can be used for this.
NOTE: It is important not to use a latex sponge as it stops the silicone from curing.
7. Begin with deep purple/blue to capture skin undertones.
8. Stipple red colouring over areas that would typically redden. To remove areas that become too opaque dab a cotton bud over to remove excess.
Stippling/Flicking method:
1. Cut a chip brush at a diagonal angle.
2. Thin down the mixture with more naptha.
3. Load brush with product and flick product onto silicone.

Once the silicone paint is applied to the silicone cast it won't rub off once it has set. Therefore, it is important to take your time when painting to prevent mistakes.
FFX S-series pigments - for professional use and include a vast areas of shades and tones.
Flocking - used to create skin irregularites and depth.
Glow worm pigments - powders that can be added over plastic, rubber and foam. Allows product to glow in the dark.
SAM - tin and platinum silicone pigments, ideal for painting silicone surfaces.
Silcpig pigments - highly pigmented colorants for silicone.
Matting powder is recommended to matt down the naturally glossy finish to the silicone paints.
Most effective when layered and applied to pre-pigmented and flocked silicone.
Psycho paint - transluscent clear paint base used for making a thin layer over silicone.
FFX kits - come in various colours.
FFX ly - ideal for latering colour to create depth to silicone skins
FFX M - medical serious for creating ultra realistic skintones - contains more skin undertone shades.
FFX F - higher pigmentation and brighter colours
SAM - tin and platinum silicone paints.
Leave the silicone to cure for several hours.
Ratio: 10 parts solvent to 1 part silicone.
Be careful not to apply the mixture all the way to the edge of the silicone as the solvent can deteriorate the encapsulated edges.
To save time colour pre-pigment the silicone when casting. It is also helful to about flocking to create more depth.
Hand painting vs Airbrush
- Hand painting silicone is considered quicker and less hassle because airbrushes can clog quickly, particularly when thinned silicone is run through them.
Silicone painting is better for preapplication of the appliance not postapplication.
